A musical interlude...

We interrupt this recap of my Western Trek extended birthday celebration with family.

With a musical note.

It's the second night of Charleston's Spoleto, the city's 41st  annual salute to the arts and music.

Jon Batiste, leader of the Stay Human band, performed outdoors Friday and Saturday night on the campus of the College of Charleston.

I was there on Saturday, a terrific low-humidity, balmy night although an approaching tropical storm had threatened to make the show move indoors.

Jon leads his band on the CBS Late Show With Stephen Colbert.  Unbeknown to most of the audience, Jon's boss Colbert was in the crowd with us.

Colbert is a Charleston native who spends a lot of his free time here in the Holy City

The band this evening was the Dap-Kings, on their third outing with the talented young New Orleans native.

It was the first time I had seen the Dap-Kings without Sharon Jones, it's dynamic and VERY animated leader who sadly died recently.

I did not bring my camera and depended instead on my cell phone camera to capture some of the melodic action.

Times like this, I do miss the telephoto lens on my "real" camera. But, I settled in for an enjoyable show that was about 20 minutes longer than expected.

As usual for concerts here at the Cistern Yard, the sound was precise and the setting beautifully lit.

Even the folding seats seemed more comfortable.

Jon exhorted the audience to stand and dance.

"We don't play music like this for a crowd that's sitting down."

We stood. We clapped in rhythm. We sang along.  And, I am sure, some were dancing.

I hope many of you were there Saturday or the night before. Here is the City Paper review of the Friday show.

"Gonna Be ON Tv Soon...."

Stepping up to a larger flat screen television set MIGHT cause a problem.

For my cat.

And, for me.

She has never paid attention before but the bigger, brighter image seems to catch her attention.

She favors the Detroit LIONS, the Jacksonville JAGUARS, the Cinncinati BENGALS and the Carolina PANTHERS.

At first she walked carefully over and around the various tv remote controls.

Some were quite old and some were brand new.

There's even one now for a ROKU unit so I can stream Netflix.

I'm waiting until I install my Blu-Ray DVD player before I consolidate ALL into my universal remote.

I took the batteries out of the ones I'm not using now.

The cat has moved closer but - so far - has not pawed the screen.

Apparently, football is the mainstay of her tv watching.

She does not seem to be interested in Comedy Central.

Not even Jon Stewart on The Daily Show or Stephen on the Colbert Report.

I knew my kitty was curious.

I just assumed she had a sense of humor.

Streaming movies is a great way to see big, vivid films. The cat's not much of a cinema buff but let's see what happens when we check out Animal Planet.

Just A Face In The Crowd....

This appears to be the "Early Bird" souvenir towel.

Don't know how many were made but I got this at 9:00am before the noon start of the Rally.

Edged my way to the center near the second large screen but crowd crunch was fierce.

Ended up to the left of the stage with some more elbow room - and a place to sit on my small blanket. Unfortunately a media stand blocked my view.

But there was a great Jumbo-tron for an excellent view of the onstage activity.

And the SIGNS!

Very creative and funny.

I stood among a very mixed-age crowd. Some older but most younger.

A well-behaved group of people.

When the assemblage was told to do a Hand-Wave, one could see that the ripple took a long, long, long time to reach back toward the Washington Monument.

Later I heard that admittance to the actual Mall was closed by the National Park Service around 11 am.

I still have not heard an "official" estimate of the crowd size but certainly believe it was more than 150,000.

There were at least that many ahead of me trying to get on the Metro afterward.

Wow. I took a lot of pictures with my Canon S90. Click on these to see more detail. Thanks for coming by.

If you were in the DC crowd and I didn't say "hi" I'm sorry.)
