Graffiti Aerosol Artistry

In my grueling, ongoing quest to check out ALL the area bars, clubs and music venues, I was wandering pretty close to home on Friday.

The Sparrow had announced it was opening the next day, just off Montague in the Park Circle Community.

When I walked in they were sweeping up, putting out tables and chairs and two young men were still painting the stage black, using a brush and a short-handle roller.

The smell of new paint was in the air.

Then I noticed some familiar faces painted on walls all around the new club.

Well, not people I actually hang out with, but at least some I knew about.

Famous people. movie stars, and tv personalities.

Edgar Allan Poe ....Gandhi ....Ray Charles.... and Bill Murray.

Well-known local artist and graffiti muralist Douglas Panzone was still creating "Caddyshack's" Carl Spackler.

I was smelling spray paint because I didn't have on a breathing mask.

As Doug's site shows, you've seen his work outside at Bert's Grocery on Folly Beach, and inside the Tin Roof in West Ashley and HoM, on upper King Street as well as Mellow Mushroom.

Welcome to legal graffiti in North Charleston!

He has a colorful palette but I doubt that Doug gets his art supplies from Lowe's or Home Depot.

(Please click on the photos for more details of Doug's work.)

Obviously, these are not posted yet on his site.

Well, maybe by now they are.

I plan to go back, have a beer or two and listen to the music.

The owner came in as I was leaving, beaming and saying "Hey, all the paperwork is done.

We're officially gonna open tomorrow!"

And they did.

"You Had Me At KWAK..."

So the last time I had seen a Kwak served in the distinctive glass in it's miniature wooden holder was in Belgium.

It's a requirement when serving it properly.

By Belgian law.

Or tradition.

With 700 different beers - and particular glasses for each one - it can get confusing.

But Oak Barrel Tavern in West Ashley does it right.

If you're heading to Gene's Haufbrau or crossing the street to Triangle Char or Mellow Mushroom, you might miss the small store front.

Seek it out.

You'll be glad you did for a change of pace. And taste.

And, speaking of Easter, it's time for me to dust off my two favorite "seasonal" shots.

The bunnies of course came from the internet.

I buy a chocolate bunny each year but keep forgetting to take pictures as I bite off the ears.

The other shot of a cancellation sign was taken on James Island about 12 years ago.

A church's annual Easter tradition ran into problems and could not be presented.

I love tradition.

Chocolate bunnies or reliving a beer drinking experience in Bruges, Belgium.

(Clicking on the pictures usually produces more detail. A shot taken from the internet does not always enlarge. My small collection of beer glasses includes a tall yard of ale glass, a half-yard, a foot and a tiny toe. Collect glasses responsibly.)

The "Birthday Suit" sketch...

So it's the 8th annual Charleston Comedy Fest.

An extra day was added this year to the popular annual treat.

Onstage at Theatre 99. it's the New york city Village Voice 2010 winners.

The sketch team is called "MURDERFIST".

They are killing the packed audience.

This is troupe member Henry Zebrowski as a smirking GIANT Genie (out of a very large bottle).

The 10-person mayhem group of long-sketch performers has split the sides of everyone there with their brand of controlled chaos.

It can't possibly get much better...right?

Wanna bet?
Just a few scenes later, Henry is back "UN-dressed" as a Chris Farley-size man who has just been beaten, robbed and forced to strip. NYC humor.

Trust me, the crowd was loving it!

The thief shows up with Henry's briefcase and shreds the last of his dignity.

It's possible no one noticed his left foot is missing a black sock. But he DOES have big hands.

Earlier TAROT LOUNGE from Las Vegas, had improv-ed like crazy with sketches based on a card reading of an actual live audience member.

Well, she was a real person and it was a real Tarot card from a real deck.

Misplaced body parts were featured in their bits as host Matt Donnelly (center) acted as Ringmaster.

The finale brought back many of the acts who had performed all around town during the Festival. The ad libs and improvizations were off the chart.

The show ended well after midnight but I didn't get to go to Mellow Mushroom for the L'After Party.

I had nothing to wear.

(Thank for stopping by. Be careful when you click on images. Everything WILL get bigger.)
