Fresh fish Yes .....but no waffles.

Well, I try to get around and keep an eye on new things that pop up.

Case in point: I have driven by this corner location for about 14 years. It's on Remount Road in North Charleston, on the edge of Hanahan.

For most of that time it was a paint & body shop.

Then that closed. For a long, long time.

Saw some workers there recently and some equipment being hauled inside.

Ta-Da.  Fulford Fish is now open for business.

Fresh seafood in one door and take-away plates and sandwiches in the other.

Spoke with A.J. Fulford, the owner (he also had the auto repair business there) and he suggested I try the very, very fresh scallops.

Or the local shrimp.
Or oysters.
Crab legs too.
Big ones.

Did I mention the Blue Claw Crabs?

When I'm out dining, I usually ask if the shrimp are "local" and I've heard various answers.

I like YES, they are! None of that "Well, sure.....from the Gulf."

Apparently I have not been paying close attention when I'm driving on Savannah Highway/

How could I have missed Boxcar Betty's.

As their site says, they offer high end chicken sandwiches. Check out the menu.

I was embarrassed to find they've been open about 8 months. In my defense, I have been on a diet that is not too excited about "fried."

Close by is Early Bird Diner where I had my first chicken & waffles.

So I asked and the young lady at the register pointed to the large menu printed on a wall.

Looks like they had sized up the competition and were staying with their target of high-end fried chickens on an array of sandwiches.

Don't think they would make me one with grilled chicken.

I also have had chicken & waffles at Rarebit on upper King Street. (Pre-diet).

And at Bay Street Biergarten.

Hmm. You'd think you could get that interesting combo at Waffle House or Huddle House?

(Click on the photos for more details.)

Before I started the diet, I was getting into craft beers.

Plenty of THAT going on around here. And, of course, my heritage of fried, fried, fried.

Well I like the weight loss and being able to keep it off.

Mmmm. A golden waffle, melted butter and syrup.

I miss fried.

Red Meat and pink local shrimp.

Thanks Groupon.

And all the other companies that offer you discount dining coupons.

Naturally, I appreciate the quality restaurants who participate and I hope they gain some new customers.

That's the beauty of a BOGO (Buy One Get One free). It's a win-win for everybody.

The bacon-wrapped filet mignon, topped with crab meat and served with fries, was my choice the other night.

Queen Anne's Revenge on Daniel Island is very customer savvy and even offers an "early bird" discount of 20% I saw on their web site.

You would not combine the offers but it's good to know they are keeping an eye on MY bottom line.

Someone had suggested that, unless you want it rare, a thick filet is cooked more evenly if you ask to have the chef  "butterfly" it.

I'll remember that because I'm a medium kind of steak eater.

The appetizer was a nice cold shrimp cocktail.

I saw signs that QAR uses local shrimp and they were firm and tasty.

I'm sure there is a delightful - and sinful - dessert list but I had reached my pleasure level and skipped that treat.

(Click on the pictures for more detail.)

I warn you though...you're going to have a hunger attack.

Have not forgotten I promised some pictures of the Canadian Suspension bridge.

Hang on, they're coming soon.

I stopped to eat.

Yes, LOCAL Shrimp.....

It's Summertime and the livin' is easy.

Charleston restaurants always tell you when they proudly serve fresh LOCAL shrimp.

You might say "bragging."

As you look this over, I know you're calculating.

Yes, that is a POUND of peel 'n' eat Lowcountry neighborhood shrimp. For each of us.

Any fresher and I'd still be holding the dripping net.

The Noisy Oyster bought an old Applebee's on the corner of Market and East Bay and present visitors (and residents) yet another fresh reason to come downtown.

Arriving just before 8:00pm on a balmy Friday night, we were told there'd be a short wait for a table. Makes sense... height of season and all. Carriages and tourists wandered by and about 15-20 minutes later we were sipping a cold beer.

The server got a break as he started his spiel. He suggested we start with an order of fried green tomatoes and how great the rock shrimp taste...we stopped him and said we live here and just wanted a pound of peel & eat.

He smiled and said "Surely, NOT one pound to share."

Good food and good service.

And a good tip.

Loyalty Cards work....

So I wanted some peel & eat shrimp. Local shrimp, of course.

I carry a "loyalty card" in my wallet for a local eatery with "Shack" in its name and the nice lady behind the bar brought me a half pound of steamed shrimp.

I handed over my plastic loyalty card so my presence would be noted in the computer. I was told the computer responded that I had accrued a $10 discount. Hey, the shrimp were free.

Fellow sitting a few stools down the bar watched this and asked about the loyalty card. He was down from New England and, following my lead, was ordering some of the local shrimp too.

The bartender stated the benefits, including a "free dinner on your birthday."

He smiled and said "Then THIS is free. Today's my birthday." She agreed and he and I discussed other spots he should check out on his holiday.
I suggested that he walk across East Bay to a very well done "pirate theme" restaurant called The Buccaneer. The decor features lots of old Charleston brick and pirate artifacts. I told him to look for the Boddingtons ale sign out front.

It used to be a huge dance club called City Bar for many years.

When I first came back 15 years ago it was Acme Bar & Grill. I still have one of its t-shirts that says Think Global/Drink Local.

I am VERY loyal.
