Blues Picker & Singer Extraordinaire
Rory Block, a multiple W.C. Handy Blues Music award winner, came to play some blues at the Pour House a week and a half ago.
I support live music and want every act to receive a great
Charleston Welcome. An early show on a Wednesday night at the
PoHo is often a crowd challenge.
Rory - blues, roots singer and guitarist - acknowledged it was a last minute change in her schedule and she expected a less than normal size audience.
This pro had seats placed right down front and she conducted a terrific "guitar clinic." She switched back and forth among four guitars and featured the sounds - and her memories - of Son House and Mississippi John Hurt. Wow.
She played in the Netherlands and Belgium earlier this year and was on her way the next day to Charlotte and Atlanta, so Charleston was fortunate to receive an outstanding evening of Mississippi Delta blues.
A friend who knows how much I enjoy music and concerts touted an
"app" he has on his iPhone.
Holding up a flickering lighter in tribute to the band has been updated.
I don't own an iPhone but I think Rory would have liked seeing it glowing in the dark as she played.
Hope she comes back again.

Ottawa Version Of The "Blues."

Caught some
"Northern Blues" from Canada a few nights ago at Home Team BBQ.
The
JW Jones Blues Band just released its 4th CD and response has been strong. They play some rollicking Chicago and Delta blues licks.
Here JW gets some "help" on his guitar from Jesse Whiteley who usually is on organ. Backing them is drummer Jeff Asselin.

It's important to know who plays what because the three rotate around the tiny stage and switch off on all the other instruments.
And each of the talented trio does all of it well.
Look for them to return. You'll have a great night. eh.

Very Early, Early Bird Blues Show

Since I was selected as a
"SpoJo" (Spoleto Citizen Journalist), I try to keep on top of what interests me during our annual Arts Festival.
As a live music fan in general - and Blues in particular - I am looking forward to the Piccolo-Spoleto
Early Bird Blues show starring
OLD CROW downtown today from 4-7 pm.
The venue is the Mad River Bar & Grille at 32 N. Market and the admission is only $10.
This former church building - just off East Bay - is known as a High Energy Sports Pub/Tavern with 23 hi-def tvs but it also has become a mecca for Blues music since Cumberland’s closed, according to Gary Erwin, producer of Charleston's annual 10-day Blues Bash each February.
OLD CROW, from North Carolina, plays Delta Blues, Ragtime and Old Timey Bluegrass on harmonica, fiddle and Dobrow. If you’ve enjoyed The
Wiyos or our local musicmakers The
V-Tones, you should have a rollicking good time today at Mad River.
Gary has Blues acts booked at Mad River almost every day - check the schedule at www.piccolospoleto.com - and Wanda Johnson is set for Friday June 6.
Please check out my SpoJo entry at
www.spoletotoday.com and follow ALL the great contributions in print, blogs, on Twitter, Videos and even Podcasts.
